"Saint-Saens and His World"

The Bard Music Festival celebrates "Saint-Saens and His World" August 10-12 and August 17-19 at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson in northern Dutchess.

The career of Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) spanned the course of French music from Gounod to Ravel, and his prodigious, stylistically varied output helps to define our understanding of the classical, the romantic, and the modern in music. Over two weekends, the 23rd Bard Music Festival explores the life and times of the French composer, with performances of many of his masterworks, including his Third Symphony, and works by his contemporaries.

Bard Music Festival's In-Depth Survey of Music by Camille Saint-Saens and His Contemporaries

The Bard Music Festival is back as part of Bard SummerScape 2012. Enjoy twelve concert programs over two mid-August weekends in honor of the exploration of "Saint-Saens and His World." The concerts, lectures, panel discussions, and insightful commentary make up Bard's examination of Camille Saint- Saens. They provide insight into the music of Belle Epoque France and all genres of Saint-Saens's extraordinary composition. The music includes works from contemporaries and compatriots, with a special concert performance of the opera Henry VII.

From August 10th to the 12th,  "Paris and the Culture of Cosmopolitanism" is presented at Bard SummerScape, which positions Saint-Saens in his native city. The second weekend (August 17-19) presents "Confronting Modernism", which portrays a time in France's history where the tragedy of World War ! ended. It paints the picture in history where modernism came into play and there was the hope of golden promise.
